Founded in 1896 in Minneapolis by Paul A. Schmitt, who had managed the sheet music department at Century Piano before starting his own business. Incorporated in 1926 and expanded into publishing school choral, band, and orchestra music alongside its instrument retail trade. The company has stayed in the Schmitt family for four generations and survives today as Schmitt Music, a Twin Cities instrument retailer.

Grew out of Finder & Urbanek, a Chicago sheet-music and saxophone-accessory business; incorporated as Rubank, Inc. in 1927 when Harry Ruppel Sr. and Joseph James Urbanek bought out their partner. Became one of the largest music-education publishers, known for its Elementary/Intermediate/Advanced method-book series (the saxophone method dates to 1934 and is still used today). Dissolved as an Illinois corporation in 1988; its catalog was absorbed into Hal Leonard, which still publishes the Rubank methods.

Remick's catalog, and New World Music to secure film-music copyrights. Over the following decades it grew through further acquisitions -- including Birch Tree Group (1988) and CPP/Belwin, the former Columbia Pictures print-music arm (1994) -- into the world's largest print-music publisher. In 2005, Warner Chappell Music sold this print division to Alfred Music.
