Founded in 1896 in Minneapolis by Paul A. Schmitt, who had managed the sheet music department at Century Piano before starting his own business. Incorporated in 1926 and expanded into publishing school choral, band, and orchestra music alongside its instrument retail trade. The company has stayed in the Schmitt family for four generations and survives today as Schmitt Music, a Twin Cities instrument retailer.
