Founded in 1883 in Lynchburg, Virginia by Theodore Presser, originally to publish his music-education magazine The Etude, which drove him into sheet-music publishing to fill its pages. Acquired The John Church Company (Sousa's main publisher) in 1930 and Oliver Ditson Company in 1931. Considered the oldest continuously operating music publisher in the United States.
