Founded in 1921 in Cleveland by Carl Ludwig (no relation to Ludwig Drums), starting with his own composition to fill a gap in pedagogically sound but exciting school-band music. His wife, Elizabeth Ludwig, took control on his death in 1982 and later married Frederick Fennell, founder of the Eastman Wind Ensemble.
