Founded in 1947 in Winona, Minnesota by brothers Harold "Hal" and Everett "Leonard" Edstrom with Roger Busdicker. Bought out by internal management in 1985, it became the world's largest print-music publisher by 1987 through acquisitions including Jenson Publications (1989) and Shawnee Press (2009). Reorganized as Hal Leonard LLC under Seidler Equity Partners in 2016, and acquired by Muse Group in 2023.
